| You overlooked the Kurtis SP "No Passenger" album? |
|
|
This is the best instrumental album of the past year that you may have missed.
Kuris SP, collaborator and song writer on the LI(F)E album, released "No Passenger" completely under the radar a few months ago. But this project deserves more than just a couple thumbs up. More than a few kudos. Kurtis SP is doing something special and it deserves your ear. Check the snippets on this page if you want a taste:

Other than CD we also have the album available as a digital download:

Here's a new review from Rave Magazine that just came in:
http://www.ravemagazine.com.au/content/view/19731/180/
What’s in Brisbane’s water supply that we’re turning out world-class instrumental hip hop artists like Kurtis SP and Tigermoth? Is somebody grinding up DJ Krush albums and feeding them into the pipes? If they are it’s working and I’ll gladly begin feeding my copies into the grinder – just doing my bit. Kurtis SP started out as a drummer with live hip hop acts Shin-Ki-Row and 2Dogs and like a lot of drummers who’ve turned beatsmiths, he mixes live instrumentation and samples with a precision that stops you from realising where one ends and the other begins.
This, his debut album representing 10 years of hard work, is a mixscape you can get lost in. It’s a mix of bedroom chillout and survival horror soundtrack, atmospheric enough to give Burial a run for his money. More Soul is, as the name suggests, soulful as all get-out with an extremely funky beat, horns and bongos, which makes a nice break from the late-night, slightly mournful, almost claustrophobic stuff that is No Passenger’s default sound. The Lost Man is straight back into the doomy kind of stuff, focussing on the taut drums. If Kurtis is playing his own drums on this, then nice work. In just over 45 minutes, No Passenger creates a lush landscape that you’ll want to return to again and again.

Great album. In my opinion it's right up there with Blockheads 'Music by Cavelight' or Signifys 'Sleep No More'. Instrumental records can easily rub me the wrong way when done badly, but this is so right, really a beautiful record. |

I got this and something about it just didn't click for me. I like dark music, but it was almost too dark and the bass on most the tracks was just annoying. I really wanted to like it after "Hell Of A Year", but something failed. |

lol (laugh out loud), no shit. I wrote that out with a smirk on my face, didn't think anyone would actually bite, though.
I think acronym speak is funny. I have a friend that actually says "brb." I just laugh, now it's kind of a joke with some of my friend and I.
Anyway, these beats are dope, y'all (you all) should check 'em out. |

Back to the topic at hand, this album is absolutely fantastic. I am by no means well-versed on the world of strictly instrumental hip hop (if that's what this would be categorized as), but this is by far one of the best instrumental records I've heard, period. Kurtis SP captures a mood like nobody's business, certainly better than DJ Shadow or even RJD2. The samples are phenomenal, the beats are crisp, and the theme realized as constant. Terrific album to chill and reflect to. |
