Where exactly is this "stolen land" you dwell upon?

I just heard this story on NPR while I was driving. This is a big issue that almost no one will care about. And of course the common American will be like, "What the fuck...3 BILLION of our tax dollars will be going to the Indians??"

Truth is, they're owed much more than that. And, no, not just because their land was stolen from them before and after white settlers killed off 98% of their population. We owe them money due to a deal that was made when the US used their land (it was their land legally) for the sake of oil and raw materials. The deal was that they would pay the Indians part of the profits that were made off of their land, and for a great deal of time that did not happen. During this 13 year long class action suit, documents were actually DESTROYED in an effort to screw the Indians of money that was owed to them.

It's nice that this is being settled. Maybe nice isn't the right word...maybe I should say "neat." It's pretty neat. It's so neat and nice how it breaks down to about $1000 being paid to each person who stands to make money from this settlement.

This is good to hear, even if a bit of a token gesture to each individual. On my only visit to America, I visited a number of native American reservations in Arizona - Navajo, Apache, Hopi and a few other tribes. It's a sickening and heartbreaking story. One nice little ironic twist was a story I was told and subsequently read up on, about a tribe on the Pima river, outside of Phoenix, who were now selling water from their river back to the white folk of Phoenix, who are slowly running out due to poor water management, greed and the apparently out of control population explosion of that particular city. I found that interesting and quite satisfying.

The balance will never even be close to equal as long as Pocahontas s enjoyed by children, not to mention some adults, everywhere. It's one thing to take liberties with an animated movie, especially a Disney film, but you owe something to historical accuracy when you base that movie on a real person.
