Sage signs with Epitaph!?  Reply with quote

So,
The word on the street is that Sage has signed a (3) album deal with Epitaph Records.

My question is: Will Hope be the first Sage album under the Epitaph label?

What happened with Lex Records?

as far as I know, we are going through Lexoleum Records out of the UK. A subsidary label of Warp. They have offices in the states too, so don't worry.

Yes...this is a Non-Prophets album entitled HOPE.

It's a summer album for sure. Very uptempo, funny and RAPPY. A bit on the aggressive side. I dis a lot. heh

LA was lucky enough to get a taste of some tracks off HOPE, recently preformed live...understand they were VERY well taken.

You heard it here first...

Sage said awhile ago that the Epitaph deal is for 3 of his solo albums. So Hope will still be on Lex as far as I know.

[quote="Sage Francis"]yes, I have signed to Epitaph.

out of curiosity, i was wondering some of the specific things that set a label like epitaph apart from your run of the mill horror-story record label. ive heard numerous people talk about their respect for artistic freedom, and fair treatment of the artists, etc., etc. but... what does this really translate into? i mean, do they basically agree to front the production money for a certain number of album copies and expect very little in return (pecentage wise)... do they stay completely out of the way creatively and just work with whatever an artist gives them?

i dont mean to pry into contract specifics or anything, its just that ive always thought of record companies sort of as banks... they help someone put an album out financially (like a loan) and then expect some return (interest on their investment). is a label like epitaph just a more fair bank or do they not even operate that way at all? the marketing/production end of the music business has always baffled me so forgive me if i'm way off here.

They will take a lot of the business burden off of my own shoulders.
They will get my albums into stores everywhere.
They will do promotion and publicity.
They will give me a much better royalty rate than I would ever get on any other major label.
They will offer me more than I have been able to work out on my own up until this point.
They will and have treated me with a lot of courtesy and respect.
They will let me make the kind of music I like to make.
