Being nautical?

I'm 75% done with a big collaborative editing project. Here's how it works:

1) Writer sends submission to me and co-editor
2) One of us puts submission onto GDocs
3) We edit and track changes on edits in Word/GDocs (GDocs needs some work in the "track changes" department)
4) One of us posts his edits first.
5) The other person copypastas his edits into the other guy's edit file
6) We send the collaborative edits, his comments in blue, mine in red, to the writer
7) Writer sends back new edits.
8) Repeat steps 1-7 until we get a final draft. Do this for a dozen or so submissions.
9) Send final drafts to exec editors.
10) They send back their edits now to us.
11) We send those edits, with our own new comments to writers
12) Writers send them back to us. We look them over then send them up the chain.
13) They come back down the chain.
14) Repeat steps 9-14 til the submissions go to peer reviewers (who, thankfully, deal directly with the writers)
15) Everything's approved, now me and coeditor have to write an introduction. We kick around ideas, then start writing, separately and together on a GDoc for that purpose.

I'll stop here and say Google Wave would have streamlined this process AND made it otherwise better.

I can also see this coming into play with event planning, which I do a lot too.

Sorry I was being punny, not serious at all with the docks thing.

I definitely see how a wave would be useful in your circumstance.

I'm imagining a Wave that starts "Will you marry me" and ends up including parents, wedding planners, the band, the officiant, the lady who designed the dresses, the chef who designed the cake, and the bartender. Widgets will help with pricing and ideas. It will happen one day and will be kinda cool when it does.

Kinda cool and kinda horrible at the same time, but I definitely see your point. ha

It takes time, sweetheart. Don't you worry your pretty little head, the G-man will send it out when he sees it fit to.

I just got mine! (thanks R. Kamidees, love you long time!!!)

Once I get more used to how to work it, I can't wait. This is kind of exciting. I'm doing the national novel writing thing right now, and my thought today playing with google wave, is how much fun it would be to write a novel in real time for a group of readers and collaborators who can read it as I'm writing it, and jump in with new tangents and annotations and support.

I think I would pay to watch a great writer write in real time. To watch them edit in real time. Finally you could make writing like campfire storytelling.

I can't wait until this goes mainstream. I also was able to drag and drop video into one of my waves, which is something I've been wanting my gmail to do for ages. I want to be able to do the same with mp3s.

As someone mentioned before, this is great for D&D. Dungeon Masters unite!

As for watching a writer write a novel? I don't know if I could get into that. If I was part of the creative process, then yeah. Say a friend wanted me to edit their story or something. As an audience, I don't think immediate input would be good for the writer. It wouldn't make it his writing anymore. IMO, there would be too many people stirring the pot and it would just become a "choose your own adventure" book. Also, the time involved would be unreal. I think from a reader's perspective I'd want the final product. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy looking at works with the edits and hand notes scribbled in on the side from the author. I just don't want people to make suggestions that may break the writer from his original style.

Unless, did you mean you'd just sit back and quietly watch him write? That I might be able to get into.

Yeah I meant more as a virtual campfire thing. Writing as a performance art. You could also have it be multimediaish if the writer got everything prepared ahead of time in terms of images and music.

I think it'd be fun to Wave with Sarah... perhaps gather all the funny people and good doodlers here and work on a comic strip.
