[quote]Rhymesayers is proud to announce a new series of releases geared towards shining light on some much deserved up-and-coming independent artists. Developed to be a launch pad, the RSE Spotlight Series will provide select services and distribution to emerging artists ready to go to the next level, by expanding their fanbase and sales history. All RSE Spotlight Series releases will be specially priced at retail, encouraging not only the support of record stores but also creating added value for the consumer.
With these challenging times in the music industry, the reliability and quality of the Rhymesayers brand and its releases will create the foundation for the RSE Spotlight Series, while allowing us to continue our long history of exposing important new voices to the masses.
Toki Wright, is the first of such said voices. A highly respected community activist and longtime member of the Twin Cities Hip Hop scene, Wright is most recently known around the world as the engaging and energetic hype man and opening act for Brother Ali. Featured on recordings by Atmosphere, P.O.S, and C-Rayz Walz, to name a few, Toki brings years of experience and numerous accolades (2007 Twin Cities Hip-Hop Awards "Best Knowledge Spitta" Winner, 2006 KMOJ Radio Artist of the Year, 2003 Star Tribune Artist of the Year - Honorable Mention, 2002 City Pages Hip-Hop Artists of the Year, 2002 Minnesota Music Award Nominee: Best Hip-Hop Artist, etc.), to his debut solo, full-length release, A Different Mirror on Rhymesayers Entertainment June 9th, 2009.
"One of the dopest emcees around, who makes noise both on the microphone and as an un-compromising community activist...we like to call him the unofficial mayor of the Twin Cities." -Davey D [quote]

The album should be solid. I really dug his verse on the first P.O.S. record.
Another free leak "State of Emergency" available here: http://tokiwright.com/ |

Holy shit I love this dude's rhyme style. And the beat on "Next Best Thing" is like a time machine back to 94.
I feel like people kicking rhymes at this medium-to-low speed these days don't usually have this much personality to their delivery. His inflection is super classic.
He sounds a bit like if Ahmad had a baby with Fat Lip. Is that a crazy thing to say? |
