Sage Francis & Buck 65: Bestest Friends :: Two of indie rap's greatest acts get siked about their BFF situation
10/30/07 :: URB 150

Sage Francis and Buck 65 have been brosefs since Sage called Buck out of the blue in 1998. The two have since shared buses, hotel rooms, planes and apparently restrooms while on tour. They've shared one touching moment after the next, like the night in Glasgow when they walked in on their seedy hotel clerk spanking it whilst watching porn. And now their relationship has taken on a new dimension with Sage's Strange Famous Records releasing Buck's The Situation.

URB: You guys have sort of similar backgrounds. What led to your kinship?
SAGE: Well, we were really isolated. And every time I listen to old Buck 65 songs I hear a lot of similarities between what he was talking about and what I was talking about and just the way he processed everything.
BUCK: That's exactly the same way that I remember feeling at the time and kinda the way I see it now. Thinking back on it, a white, loner, nerdy kid growing up in the middle of nowhere in the woods on a dirt road, you had limited access to good music, so you'd take it and really run with it and you allow it to become so important to you and certain tapes or whatever else become like sacred scripture for you.
SAGE: Lifestyle choices were huge, too. I always really felt like a loner and I still do, part of that was, in my youth, just completely abstaining from drinking or any drug use. That was so common in hip-hop and that was part of the thing that pushed me away from popular hip-hop. And then to find out that here was this dude in Halifax, Nova Scotia, who also was not involving himself in the drinking culture, smoking or doing anything. It just blew my mind.
BUCK: I think that was definitely a thing for me...but we never, you know, sat down next to each other with our arms around each other saying, "Isn't it great that we don't do drugs?'"

URB: So what's the deal with the new release on Strange Famous?
BUCK: Well, after my last label V2 went tits up, I honestly felt that the ball had been dropped, in terms of my career in the U.S. market. That's why I was considering other options at the time when the idea first came up to work with Sage. I can remember with such clarity the morning that we first talked about it. We were on the telephone and a whole lotta other considerations just went flying out the window for me pretty quickly, even before we did any sort of business plan or nitty gritty, ins and outs, whatever. I just knew that it felt right for me and it was something that I really wanted to do. The bottom line is that it made me happy. And nothing pertaining to practical mattersólike money or distribution or anything elseówas as important in making the decision, as working with my friend. It's already abundantly clear to me that the absolute right decision has been made and all friendship considerations aside, I'm just really, really excited about, pardon the pun, the situation.

URB: Are there any good stories about you guys being on the road together?
BUCK: I don't ever remember there being too much of a dull moment from the Death Dance tour but I can remember things always being interesting in one way or another. At a show in Glasgow, in Scotland, I had to go on first at the last minute, which I'm more than happy to do, and I remember not being quite ready. I had a change of clothes for onstage but it was so little time, I went on and while I was performing my first song I changed my clothes onstage.
SAGE: That was the same show that afterwards we walked back to our hotel room and saw two people fucking on this stairwell and a small crowd gathered around and some people tried to hide and then eventually people stopped giving a shit and just crowded around. Do you remember this?
BUCK: I remember this...there was a vibe that ended up permeating the entire night. I don't know if you remember this but when we got to the hotel there was an older guy who was working at the front desk, it was quite late, and he had a very sketchy vibe and there was a TV behind the desk and he was watching pornography. At the front desk that night as we were checking in, we were like disturbing his porno excursion.

At least if that is the case your persona seems so raw... and gritty.

You sexually deviant rascals.

Am I the only one who gets angry when I see that phrase written any other way besides "psyche"?

We didn't play Europe on the anticonquistador tour. But do you mean the anticon allstars tour? That might be what I was thinking about.

Also, I agree that psyche should not be spelled sike.

Accidental pun or clever wordplay?

I think psyche is one of the coolest pre-pubescent language trends ever. It changes the noun psyche into a verb that means "an attack on one's psychical state." And the great part is, as a kid, I had no idea that that is how the word is spelled or what it normally meant. At some point, some kid was lying to another kid about some bullshit and finally just yelled "psyche!" Psychic attack!
