August, you might know this better, but didn't emo start out as a derogatory reference to what was viewed as kind of sappy punk

This is possible, im not sure actually. Of course, punk itself was a derogatory term trown at kids in new york and london trying to be different.

Bringing this SUB back to life.  Reply with quote

I was thinking about this subject recently. This kid I know told me that he always sees kids hanging outside my school that are: "dressed all emo n shit". I'll admit that I didn't always know what the word meant, but I've known for a little while now....I thought to myself: "how can someone be dressing emotionally?". Was he using the word inaccurately? Also, just the other night I was at school and this girl said to this kid that if she saw a certain song perfomed live, she would: "totally get emo". The kid asked her what that word meant and she said: "like, sad". It seemed as if she was insecure about using the word emotional. I then wondered if that could be the reason people will only use the first part of the word. I know that everyone is different, and therefor they will have their own reasons for things. It's just that I didn't know what it meant because of the shortened use. I don't understand why people don't just use the full word. Is it simply just slang? Maybe there's a reason that I'm missing. If someone knows, help a sista out.

i thought emo came from "Belle and Sebastien"-style music.. it surfaced for me on the west coast of canada in 1998.. i also thought there was a strong tie to synthesizers..and digital-type music

and my impression of "how to identify an emo kid" is:
emo kids may have dark circles under their eyes and look kinda like a cross between a brit-pop kid and a punk - check their arms too because there's usually some sort of ritual self-mutiliation. they are stunning writers/musicians with possible multiple personality disorders and a facisnation with coffeeshops. they don't swim but stand knee deep in the water and smoke cigarettes. they have no money and often spend most of their time agonizing over their broken hearts very dramatically.

it's been awhile since i drove around on indian reserves with the emo crowd...
haha! .. this is only my perspective..

imma name my first son EMO  Reply with quote

straight up my name is amy
but u should call me emo
cause i'm all about that shit

on any level
whether it's emo hip hop
emo punk
emo indie
emo female vocalists
male vocalists/musicians etc.

if it's reggae
if it's blues
if it's jazz
if it's classical
if it's beats
mixes
instrumentals
it's the words
the sound
all put together
even if it's some pop shit
and maybe even some country isth

as long as it is emotional and moves me
if it's emotive and provoking and a little metaphysical
or just simply profound and on point
if it is verbal message that tugs on my heart strings
and makes me go awwwwww or damn, that's straight
i feel that
i'm all about emo

even hardcore isht can be emo
i think eminem and tupac are way emo
alot of heavy bands and classic mainstream
gotta have their emo side

rolling stones
led zeppelin--no quarter
pink floyd--it doesn't get any more emo than pigs on the wing
or even funk--some bootsy got emo edge
parliament funkadelic--maggot brain

i'm not gonna go as far as to say i love bob mould the smiths and morrisey
but sure there are a couple tunes i can dig

only artist i can think of that i love a lot that is totally not emo in anyway
is my main man JIMI HENDRIX.......even his most famous "ballad"/little love song ANGEL is not EMO.

i don't hate on people who hate on emo
but a lot of people do
they think it is wimpy

but i like it because it is real
honest expression
elevating
sadly beautiful
can produce a catharisis
for your dark hours
might remind you of your fears and sorrows
and might make you cry or exacerbate pre-existing state of depression
but it is ultimately healing
kinda like a bandaid
for a small wound

I was at a Swollen Members show about a year ago and Moka started talking to the crowd and he was asking if anybody knew what emo hiphop was so I yelled out "Yeah, it's fucking gay!" and everyone started to laugh and than Moka got hard and was like "Whatever yo, it's all hiphop to me, we're all doing the same shit, it's just a term some people use" haha and than I think he was trying to show off to us (me and my friend) for the rest of the night cause we were like the only dudes in the audience who knew what hiphop was so he'd always make little comments and look at us for approval and shit, it was pretty funny.

You'll note, I defined emo on the previous page of this thread, and explained its origin too, so if you're curious. Go back there.

I guess music has gotten to the point that there needs to be some prefix to let the listener know that it contains emotion and substance. It's an unfortunate label, but I think there should be some way to distinguish music of substance from the crap that's become so commonplace.

that is a good point, I hate the word emo too, and I think that most emo music that I have heard (hardcore, punk, etc) is very hallow
