I'm assuming you're replying to my mention in the 'record sales' thread...
Umm... Answer Me is interesting for the whole freedom of speech thing. It's very late eighties/early nineties in the sense that its the sort of periodical vector of free speech media/arts that were under attack for its indecency. Only AM is different from Mapplethorpe (on the high end), Karen Finley, or 2 Live Crew because his censors were from the other side of the proverbial aisle. Interesting as a historical footnote (to the stories of the aforementioned, who were much more popular and better at what they do than Goad).
He did, in Redneck Manifesto, articulate a sort of redneck identity politics (though, it should be said, in a manner inferior to, say, Jeff Foxworthy or George W. Bush) that, if anything, calls into question the viability of identity politics as such. I mean, are we really to take seriously (that is, as something not to attack, with speed and violence) the redneck as a constituency. Personally, I think we might be better off if rednecks were further disenfranchised.
Anyhow. All that said, I have some sympathy for Goad (and for rednecks in the aggregate), even though he's an utter piece of shit. I don't believe in 'obscenity' laws and I actually do find the enforcement of certain domestic violence laws to be unfair. |

I love the first few issues of Answer Me! and they inspired me to make a caustic 'zine of my own in the 90's (not nearly as well-written or designed). It's not something you're supposed to agree with, but to shock you into feeling. I think the writing is top-notch and I appreciated its attention to detail. I still pull my bound copy of issues 1-3 (I don't think they ever did another bound edition, but there were at least two more issues) from time to time.
By all accounts, Jim Goad is a complete asshole and terrible to deal with. I've heard stories ranging from his outrageous, rude behavior to his body odor. It's not really surprising, given the nature of his writing. Someone told me he went totally Nazi, but that could be a rumor.
He and Debbie divorced some time ago. |

Forgot to say that:
I feel a certain sense of affinity to just about all zinesters.
I agree with Reggie: Goad could be a really good writer. He was also prone to the simplistic, though. The infamous 'Rape Issue' is so goddamn bad on so many levels. |

actually, icarus, i didn't make it past the first few posts in your redneck thread, so I wasn't aware that you had mentioned goad at all.
When I was recieving shipment at the bookstore the other day, we got a copy of the answer me reissue book in and I flipped through it and saw the geto boys and remembered reading something of his somewhere that made me laugh.
i did look around at some of Goad's book imprint "scapegoat publishing" and they have published several homo-erotic art books as well as a book written by a gay author about rejecting gay stereotypes. this isn't to say dude isn't some bigoted asshole, but I can't imagine a nazi publishing that sort of stuff.
Dude seems to me like some sort of wild animal. I find him strangely fascinating, but maybe that's just because I don't know enough about him to utterly-hate him yet.

That biography he wrote, Shit Magnet, is pretty interesting. He tries to play off the horrible shit he does like it isn't his fault or he's somehow the victim. He isn't terribly convincing in that, but the book is an interesting read. |
