The whole point is...  Reply with quote

...that if he's going to say that there is a specific way to dress "hip-hop" he'd damn well better know what dressing hip-hop is all about. Saying that it can't be described is basically saying it doesn't exist, as clothes are easy to describe. So which one is it? Does it exist or not? If it does, why not share what it is, because it seems like most people don't know...

I never said there was a specific way to dress hip hop. Don't put words in my mouth.

I said that you can dress hip hop though...there's just no way to define it, just like you can't define music....when you hear music, you know its music. When you see people dressed hip hop, you know they're dressed hip hop.

I wear t-shirts of artists I like. It just aggravates me when I'm wearing my Fantastic Damage tee and someone asks me if I've heard the new Ludacris cd. Wow.

Well, then...  Reply with quote

..if there are no parameters, it doesn't exist. Anything, especially something as superficial as clothing, should be able to be described. If you have to define hip-hop style by what it isn't, then chances are you are just being elitist by excluding those who dress in clothes that you say aren't hip-hop.

Well then music doesn't exist. Or this discussion, because this discussion could suddenly go off the deep end (as if it hasn't already.)

Oh look, its still a message board, we're still typing...but i'm typing outside parameters of normal discussion! ARHHHHH!!!

I know...  Reply with quote

...djdee said the opposite. But the opposite is bullshit. How can clothing NOT be described? How can a style of clothing NOT be described in any way at all?

Your X's are starting to annoy me... do you really need to put them at the end of every post? That's just as irritating as someone saying they're drunk every single time they make a drunken post.

Because the style is amorphous...it changes based on where you're from (borough OR city), what year it is, what frikkin' season it is, who you are, who you represent, how you express yourself, etc. etc. etc.

The style is not about hip hop at all! It's about the person and how he/she expresses him/herself! Congratulations!

You just basically said the same thing that I said. So what does that make you?

See, I said style is all about the individual, and you have essentially said the same thing.

Now, I'm not trying to argue here...I just want to understand something. are you trying to say that everyone who has some involvement in hip-hop immediately is hip-hop in fashion...in which case, if I put out a hip-hop CD and start tagging, but I have a green mohawk and an old Germs tee, does that make that hip-hop style? Or are you saying that being "hip-hop" is above and beyond clothing? If so, that's what you should have said in the first place, instead of saying that it's a style that simply can't be described. Then all of this unpleasantness could have been avoided.
